Project Details:
The Zen Condominium is the newest addition to the rejuvenated north Oliver area in downtown Edmonton. The building finishes are anchored by a brick podium that was completed with thin brick from Endicott Clay Products. The building was constructed using pre-fabricated (factory assembled) light gage steel wall panels. The developer and architect chose a thin brick because they were not able to utilize a full brick veneer in conjunction with the LGS wall structure. The ‘Coppertone’ colour worked well with the contemporary design and complemented the stucco and galvanized metal paneling.
Remo’s Masonry was contracted to install the thin brick veneer in the fall of 2009. Remo worked in conjunction with the architect and developer to refine some of the thin brick detailing to ensure the result looked like a typical brick structure. Brick headers, sills and returns were incorporated at window and door openings to create the illusion the building is constructed with a full depth brick veneer. Brick was also utilized to wrap some exterior features which created some interesting architectural detailing on the building.
The thin brick veneer was applied as an adhered veneer system over a cured scratch coat. The mason installed the thin brick units much as he would a full brick with the addition of mortar applied on the back of each piece. Each course was set level and plumb and the joints were struck as the units were installed. Installing in this manner resulted in excellent productivity for the mason and a very well integrated final product.
